AI Business OS

A domain is a folder under Domains/ for one function of your business, such as Finance or Marketing. Every piece of work in the workspace has one home, which is the domain whose function it serves. New workspaces have used domains since AI Business OS version 3.0.

Domains are numbered so they always sort in the same order. Each one comes with numbered reference subfolders that you can keep, rename or remove.

Domain Reference subfolders
01 Clients None. One folder per client instead
02 Finance Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Budgets, Reports, Tax & Compliance
03 Human Resources Employee Records, Onboarding, Policies, Recruitment, Training
04 Information Technology Architecture, Runbooks, Security, Software Development, Systems
05 Strategy & Leadership Board, Decisions, OKRs, Strategy
06 Sales Contracts, Pipeline, Proposals
07 Marketing Analytics, Brand Assets, Campaigns, Content, Social Media
08 Communications Crisis Playbooks, Internal Comms, Press, Stakeholders
09 Customer Service Customer Success, Knowledge Base, Service Levels, Tickets
10 Operations Logistics, Processes, Quality, Vendors & Suppliers
11 Procurement Agreements, Policies, RFQs, Suppliers
12 Property & Facilities Assets, Insurance, Leases, Maintenance

14 Research & Development Market Scans, Patents, Prototypes, Research Archive
15 Education & Training Assessments, Courses, Curriculum, Learners
16 Legal & Compliance Audits, Certifications, Contracts, Controls, Data Protection, Intellectual Property, Risk Register
99 Cross-Domain None. Tracked projects only

A domain holds two kinds of folder.

Kind What it is for Example
Reference subfolder Standing material that is always current and never finishes, such as the supplier invoice process or this year’s budget 02 Finance/02.3 Budgets/
Tracked project A body of work with an objective and an end, such as an audit, a campaign or a product launch 02 Finance/P004 Year-End Audit/

Reference subfolders are not tracked in your project register. Tracked projects are created with /newproject, which asks which domain the project belongs to and records the domain in .claude/state/state.json.

├── 02.2 Accounts Receivable/

├── 02.4 Reports/
├── 02.5 Tax & Compliance/
└── P004 Year-End Audit/

├── AGENTS.md
└── PRD.md

Reference subfolders take the domain’s number with a decimal suffix, so the subfolders in 02 Finance are 02.1, 02.2 and so on. Project IDs run across the whole workspace, so the next project after P004 in Finance could be P005 in Marketing.

Every domain has its own CLAUDE.md, which tells Claude what the domain is for, what each subfolder holds and any conventions to follow. Each one opens with a SETUP REQUIRED notice, and all except 99 Cross-Domain show the status “Unconfigured”. The first time you work in a domain, Claude asks you how you use it and updates the file with your answers.

Each domain CLAUDE.md belongs to you, so engine updates never overwrite one you have edited. The CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md Files page explains how these files work together.

The default subfolders are suggestions. When you ask Claude to add one, Claude follows these steps.

  1. Claude finds the highest number already used in the domain, for example 02.5.
  2. Claude creates the new folder with the next number and a Title Case name, such as 02.6 Payroll.
  3. Claude adds a row for the new folder to the subfolder table in the domain’s CLAUDE.md.

When you remove a subfolder, Claude removes its row from the table and leaves the other numbers as they are. Gaps in the numbering are fine.

01 Clients holds one folder per client, created with /newclient, and has no numbered reference subfolders.

Work you do for a client lives in that client’s folder, even when it spans several functions. The other domains are for your own organisation. If you run a marketing agency, a client’s campaign lives under 01 Clients/ and your own marketing lives under 07 Marketing/.

Keep 01 Clients even if you have no clients, because /newclient writes there.

99 Cross-Domain is for tracked projects that three or more domains own equally, where filing the project under one domain would suggest the wrong owner. A certification rollout that touches Operations, Human Resources, Legal and Finance belongs here. A marketing campaign with a small legal review does not, and belongs in Marketing.

Use this domain sparingly. If a clear owner emerges later, move the project folder into that domain and update the project’s path and domain in .claude/state/state.json. Ask Claude to make the change, because it backs up and validates the register when it writes.

A new workspace ships with sample content so you can see how the pieces fit together.

Sample Location
P001 Website Redesign Domains/04 Information Technology/
P002 Q2 Marketing Campaign Domains/07 Marketing/
P003 Staff Training Programme Domains/03 Human Resources/
Client-A, Client-B, Client-C Domains/01 Clients/

The three sample projects are registered in your project register with a note telling you to replace or archive them when you create your own projects. Archive them when you no longer need them, for example by asking for “archive P001” after running /status.

If a domain does not fit your business, you have three choices.

Choice How
Ignore it Leave it empty. It does not get in the way
Repurpose it Rename it to fit, for example 13 Products to 13 Services, and update its CLAUDE.md
Remove it Delete the folder. Keep 01 Clients, which /newclient needs

Engine updates never recreate a domain you have removed.
