client-setup
The client-setup skill gives every new client the same folder layout, so you and Claude always know where a client’s projects, correspondence and reference material belong. It asks you for the client’s details, builds the folder and writes a README.md that acts as the client’s front page.
When Claude Uses It
Section titled “When Claude Uses It”Claude loads the skill when you say “New client” or “Set up” followed by a client name. You can also type /client-setup to start it directly.
The /newclient command does the same job with two additions. It records the client’s company name and contacts in the project register when you create a client project, and it offers to start that project with /newproject straight away. Use /newclient when you want the client tracked as well as filed. See /newclient for the full command.
What It Asks You
Section titled “What It Asks You”Claude collects these details before it creates anything.
- Client or company name. This becomes the folder name.
- Primary contact. Name and role.
- Contact information. Email and phone.
- Industry or sector.
- The relationship. A short description of what you do for the client.
- Cloud storage location. Where the client’s heavy files live, if you know it.
What It Creates
Section titled “What It Creates”The folder goes under Domains/01 Clients/.
Domains/01 Clients/Harbour-Lane-Interiors/├── README.md Client overview and contacts├── Projects/ Client-specific projects├── Communications/ Email threads, meeting notes└── Reference/ Contracts, briefs, backgroundThe folder name uses Title Case with hyphens in place of spaces, so “Harbour Lane Interiors” becomes Harbour-Lane-Interiors.
The README.md has these sections.
| Section | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Header | Industry, the date the relationship started, and the cloud storage path |
| Overview | A short description of the client and the relationship |
| Contacts | A table of names, roles, emails and phone numbers |
| Active Projects | A table of project names, statuses and folder links |
| Relationship Notes | What to know when working with this client |
| Cloud Storage | Where the client’s PDFs, Office documents and images are kept |
When the folder is ready, Claude shows you the structure, confirms the location and suggests a next step, such as a first project or an initial meeting.
Where It Takes Its Context
Section titled “Where It Takes Its Context”The skill reads your organisation overview and industry terminology from .claude/company/overview.md and .claude/company/industry.md. It follows the folder naming in the File Conventions rule. See Company Context Files for how to fill those files in.
Customising the Skill
Section titled “Customising the Skill”The skill file is .claude/skills/client-setup/SKILL.md. It is a customisable engine file, so you can edit it and /update keeps your changes through a three-way merge. See Engine Protection for how that works.
The skill also looks in two places for material you add.
- Put template files for new clients in
Domains/01 Clients/_Templates/. This folder ships empty. - Create a
references/folder inside.claude/skills/client-setup/for an onboarding checklist, compliance sections for your industry, links to your CRM, or billing references.
If you track clients in PRIMA CRM, see the PRIMA CRM overview for how client records relate to the workspace.
